Curling Ice King Hospitalized
July 3, 2008
In this 2007 photo by David Rollins, above, Shorty is seen whooping it up – or being whooped up, it would seem - with his squad at the Heart to Heart Charity Bonspiel in Sudbury.
“He has all these secrets about icemaking he’s never told anyone,” remarked Jo-Ann Rizzo, who skipped a squad at the last Canadian Olympic Trials and happens to be Shorty’s niece.
“He taught Dave Merklinger, for example, as much as he thought Dave should know, but not everything. He’s going to take many secrets to the grave.
“Somebody should sit with him and write a book. He’s had such an interesting life.”
Actually, there is a full chapter on Shorty in the 2007 book The Roaring Game: A Sweeping Saga of Curling. An essential part of any curling fan’s library, you can read a review – a shameless endorsement, really – on this archived page.
Author Doug Clark briefly traces the life of “The King of Swing” from when he asked his parents if he could leave and join his brothers at an orphanage – he was nine years old – to his air force career and eventually his life as a curling rock star; immortalized in the national Curling Hall of Fame, in a legendary Tim Hortons TV commercial, and in a cameo appearance in the film Men With Brooms.
He’s even got a World Curling Tour cashspiel named after him, which at one time boasted pink house rings – but of course.
“Shorty was a huge part of my enjoyment in writing the book,” said Clark.
“When he started talking about his life story, I knew this was the closest I could get to a biography of a classic Canadian character in just one chapter.
“Even if you don’t love curling, you’ve gotta love Shorty Jenkins.”
Jenkins is expected to return home from hospital in the next two weeks. On some days, he is unaware of his condition – short-term memory being one of the first things at risk with this progressive disease.
“We are really not sure what the near future holds, unfortunately we do know what the distant future will be,” wrote Rizzo in an email to friends.
And so, curling fans who want to send best wishes to Shorty and his wife Johanna are encouraged to do via:

Not long ago a blogwriter here was approached by someone mentioned fleetingly in a very old blogpost I had written. What was it - 2005? The post itself was about an artshow at Dreams, and well I remember going there and wandering about. It’s a good thing I can remember as my post - on my own blog - was deleted to appease that person, and not by me. I was very surprised and angry. No, not at the deleter - at the person who seems to be wandering the blogosphere searching for innocent references to himself.
If I had been approached I’d've removed his name, certainly. Not my entire post including photo. Should this EVER come up again (although I can’t even see why it came up once) the official policy is this: approach the person who wrote the post.
I am thinking of IMing the person in question to complain that he has destroyed part of my blog with his meddling, however I haven’t yet.

If you haven’t heard, two skilled ex-Kevin Martin third rockers from Edmonton are joining Manitoba’s two remaining curling legends next season. Mid-90s Martin castoff Kevin Park (in CurlingZone photo with Team Kevin Koe in 2007) now joins Team Jeff Stoughton, and 2006 Martin castoff Don Walchuk is soon to join Team Kerry Burtnyk.
That was a Winnipeg Free Press link; here’s what the Winnipeg Sun thinks of all this (here and here).
Finally, in brief, from the Freep – Paul Wiecek is clearly pining.
It was only a matter of time, folks, and curling will see more of this stuff in the years to come. Look what we’ve had already: Colleen Jones with a B.C./Ontario team; Jon Mead tucking in with Toronto’s Wayne Middaugh; B.C.’s Brent Pierce with an Edmonton threesome; Newfoundland’s Brad Gushue teamed with an Albertan – and now with a Manitoban – Shannon Kleibrink with an import from Saskatchewan; Jennifer Jones with an Ontarian on board… after a Vancouverite.
And don’t forget Team Kevin Martin v.3 – the third is from Ontario (albeit born in Winnipeg) and the lead bleeds Saskatchewan green.

Milk just like barium based drink
Cost-Effectiveness and Patient Tolerance of Low-Attenuation Oral Contrast Material: Milk Versus VoLumen — Koo et al. 190 (5): 1307 — American Journal of Roentgenology
For years, countless people have had to force down about 1,200 cc of a barium contrast drink before having CT scans of their abdomen and pelvis to diagnose bowel disorders and abnormalities. The barium coats the insides of the esophagus, stomach and intestine, appearing dark while the intestinal wall appears brighter. The contrast from the barium allows radiologists to better visualize the bowel wall and more clearly delineate the bowel cavity and soft tissue. Barium drinks, however, can come with unpleasant side effects like constipation, diarrhea, nausea and cramping. The acidy-burning taste of the chalky, milky liquid can make getting it down one of the most unpleasant parts of the diagnostic test.
Children especially balk at drinking the barium–based drinks.
Clever researchers at St Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital in New York City thought , “hmmmm - constipation, diarrhea, nausea and cramping?…..same syptoms many people have if they drink milk” They wondered if milk might work just as well.
And it does!
No statistically significant differences were seen between whole milk and VoLumen with respect to degree of bowel distention and mural visualization for all segments of bowel studied
