Alpha Five Platinum: Transforming, manipulating, and analyzing data
A ton of our customers rely on Alpha Five Platinum for data manipulation, data analyis, data cleaning, data massaging, and data transformation (moving data from one format to another)
Here you can see how data can be imported from a wide variety of sources into an Alpha Five database.
A similar screen in Platinum will then show you how you can export data to the same set of formats.
As you can see, Alpha Five makes it easy to move data from one formats to another, such as from MySQL to MS SQL Server or from QuickBooks to Oracle.
In terms of manipulating data, the screen below displays some of the many options that are built right into Platinum. Plus, xbasic gives you an extra level of control over manipulating data.
The new features and abilities of Platinum have not gone unnoticed by our customers. Here’s what a few of them think: as expressed in the comments section to the Techrepublic review of Alpha Five v9:
It [Alpha Five v9] doesn’t have to be for full app development
It is great for app development, but it beats the pants off of Access for ad hoc data analysis and manipulation. The action scripting genies in combination with the expression builder make it easier to use than access, and the richness of the built in functions make it more powerful.
I imported an audit trail from Quickbooks in CSV format. The problem with many quickbooks exports is that it is really two tables combined into one, with the transaction header line repeated only once per transaction. There is also a problem in that multiple prior versions of the transaction are all referred to as prior, whereas I wanted P1 - Px to denote the particular version. Alpha’s update operation made it quite easy to transform my data as alpha contains a function that refers to the previous record. I have created a short Jing screencast at that shows how easy it is.
Alpha’s report writer has something that many competing products do not have. It can include conditional objects. Thus I can set a variety of styles in the detail band which at times can be nice.
VERY good point!
Very good point, and also something I feel contributes to what I perceive as Alpha’s huge potential (and, incidentally, flexibility) as a core/all-round development tool. It can do a huge amount of different tasks, and it can do them without you needing to write a full interface/menu/app for it, either…
It’s not just data manipulation, though - even just for the little tasks you need to do on the fly, without the need to build and deploy a fully-fledged app, Alpha5 - and the programming language built into it, Xbasic - has a HUGE range of functions (in particular file listing, list processing and character functions, including extract_string which is perfect for quickly grabbing XML data etc.) and there are dozens of dialogs and tools you can invoke with just a few snippets of code… and if you have the web app server, you can very quickly put any functionality you need available to your company/client/yourself on an Intra- or Internet website without needing to develop or distribute an application…

PhD Scholarships in Photonics at DTU, Denmark
PhD scholarships Nanophotonics for Terabit Communications (NATEC)
A new research centre focusing on nanophotonics for terabit communications is being established at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU). The centre is based on donations from a private
foundation, VILLUM KANN RASNMUSSEN FONDEN. The NATEC centre will, in particular, perform research on light-matter interaction in semiconductor quantum dots and photonic crystal structures and explore the use of such nanostructured materials for realizing photonic chips operating in the terabit regime. The centre is a strongly focused effort involving nanofabrication, experimental characterisation based on nanoscopy and ultrafast lasers, fundamental theory including topology optimization, and systems experiments and will provide ample opportunities for cross-fertilization between these areas.
The NATEC Centre is headed by Professor Jesper Mørk (jm@com.dtu.dk) from Department of Photonics Engineering, DTU, and involves the collaboration with 4 other institutes at DTU: Department of Micro- and Nanotechnology, Department of Mechanical Engineering, Center for
Electron Nanoscopy and Danchip.
At the moment we have openings within the following areas of research:
Growth and characterisation of semiconductor quantum dots and fabrication of photonic crystal based devices (Kresten Yvind; ky@com.dtu.dk).
Characterisation of pulse propagation in photonic crystal structures and ultrafast dynamics in quantum dots (Mike van der Poel; mvp@com.dtu. dk).
Theory and modelling of light-matter interaction in photonic crystal structures with quantum dots (Niels Asger Mortensen; nam@mic.dtu. dk).
Topology optimization of nanophotonic structures incorporating effects of nonlinearities and fabrication uncertainties (Ole Sigmund; sigmund@mek. dtu.dk).
Experimental and theoretical investigations of terabit systems emphasizing noise limitations and information capacity (Palle Jeppesen; pj@com.dtu.dk).
We are looking for candidates with a strong track record and with a good experimental, theoretical and/or computational background in photonics, electromagnetics or materials engineering and physics. The annual salary of PhD students starts at approximately 277,000 DKK (36,900 EUR) + pension.
For further information please contact Jesper Mørk or the persons mentioned above, or see the full job announcement at the homepage of DTU. Please send your application as a single pdf file, including CV, list of publications, certificates of exams and grades, as well as a list of references to:

Saf Restaurant

Is Saf restaurant the healthiest food in London ? It’s certainly the most exquisite, the most refreshing, the most nutritionally self indulgent, the most life changing, the most eye opening, the most likely to gently disolve pre-concieved ideas about eating out and restaurant food in general.
Saf means pure in Turkish. It is the sort of food that has been spoken of for 60 years but rarely if ever before prepared with such skillful hands and heart. Pure fantasy made into pure reality.

Shopping Mall Curling in Russia
Date of the first event is almost imminent: July 25-27, 2008.
The format sees five international men’s teams of considerable heft being jetted into the city to join three local teams, as yet undetermined.
Invited and accepted are:
Brad Gushue – Canada
Pal Trulsen – Norway
Thomas Ulsrud – Norway
David Murdoch – Scotland
Andy Kapp – Germany
Key to the venture is new WCT-E partner Adamant Construction & Property Management, a rather large Russian developer that happens to own some 1.7 million square metres of property in that city alone.
They also own a few shopping centres, including a big one that happens to boast a small ice rink. A rink that has seen curling displays in the past.
As such, shopping mall curling has come to Russia, just as it came briefly to the world’s biggest mall in Edmonton, and more recently (but sadly no longer) to a mid-sized mall in Galt, Ontario.
“It’s a bit of a breakthrough for us,” said WCT-E chief exec Armin Harder, a Canadian who lives in Switzerland.
“Adamant are covering all the costs, and the idea is to do this quite a few times leading in to Sochi in 2014.
“We look forward to putting on a good show for these guys.”
And what do the players think?
“We were pretty surprised,” said Gushue.
“We were notified by Armin Harder that the event was in the works and they asked if we were interested in attending. Of course, we said yes. But we didn’t want to get too excited until we knew for sure that the event was a go. Once we heard it was a go we got really excited.
“We have our tickets booked and we are looking forward to it… should be a great experience. Hopefully the event will help raise the profile of the game in Russia and add another event on the WCT-E for down the road.”
And on the western front:
“We are happy to be among those top teams that have been invited to this
event,” said Füssen’s Andy Kapp.
“St. Petersburg is a fantastic and booming city and to play a tournament in the middle of summer heat will be very interesting. In Germany and Switzerland we are used to playing tournaments in July and August, but not in a shopping center and not in Russia. If the ice isn’t melting, we will melt it!”
