Title: Using Wikipedia to Reenvision the Term Paper (ID: EDU07287)
Author(s): Andreas Brockhaus (University of Washington Bothell) and Martha Groom (University of Washington Bothell)
Topics: Collaboration, EDUCAUSE2007, Electronic Resources, Students, Teaching, Teaching and Learning, Virtual Community, Wiki, Wikipedia
Origin: Presented at EDUCAUSE Annual Conferences (10/23/2007)
Type: Presentations/Speeches
Abstract: The structure of the traditional term paper can limit its educational value. To make the assignment more meaningful, students published their papers in Wikipedia. This session will examine how publishing for a large online community motivated students to do better work and deal with issues of voice, knowledge, and community.

Beasiswa Gates Cambridge Scholarship
Eligibility:
One to four years of study leading to a degree at Cambridge University, England. Seniors, graduate/professional students, and graduates are eligible to apply. U.S. and non-U.S. citizens under the age of 30 are eligible. All applicants must apply directly to Cambridge [either as an affiliated student (obtaining a second bachelor's degree) or as a graduate student] and fill out the supplemental portion of the application to the Cambridge Trusts to be considered for the fellowship.
Who they are looking for:
The Trustees are required to award scholarships on the basis of a person’s intellectual ability, leadership capacity, and desire to use their knowledge to contribute to society throughout the world by providing service to their communities and applying their talents and knowledge to improve the lives of others.
In selecting Gates Cambridge Scholars, the Trust looks for students of exceptional academic achievement and scholarly promise for whom advanced study at Cambridge would be particularly appropriate. The Trust expects a good match to be made between the applicant’s qualifications and aspirations and what Cambridge has to offer. Successful applicants will have the ability to make a significant contribution to their discipline while in Cambridge, with a strong aptitude for research, analysis, and a creative approach to defining and solving problems.
“Priority” Deadline June 2, 2008:
Students are encouraged to submit a priority application for the Gates Cambridge Scholarship. The priority deadline is June 2, 2008 for students wishing to study at Cambridge University beginning in 2009-10. University faculty and staff who are familiar with the Gates Cambridge Scholarship will review materials received by this date, while only the Office of Scholarships for International Study will review materials submitted after this date. In either case, we will provide feedback on your application and are willing to work with you through the summer on subsequent revisions.
Please submit the following requested information to the Scholarships Office (with the exception of the Choice of University Statements, one set may be submitted covering multiple scholarships) at scholarships@illinois.edu or 321 International Studies Building, MC-480:
1. Transcripts from all colleges attended (photocopies acceptable)
2. 3-5 Letters of Recommendation (drafts acceptable)
3. Resume
4. Personal Statement of 1,000 words (Personal Statement should be in 12 point font and double spaced)
5. One Choice of University Statement
In addition to the generic transcripts, personal statement, and resume, it is in your best interest to submit at least three letters of recommendation (three letters are ultimately required) and a “Choice of University Statement” outlining your choice of coursework and/or proposed research at Cambridge.
Further information about priority deadline requirements
Campus Deadline 12:00 Noon August 26, 2008:
Unlike other prestigious scholarship schemas, the Gates Cambridge Scholarship does not formally include a university endorsement process. An applicant may choose to independently submit application materials to Cambridge and the Gates Scholarship. However, if you are interested in obtaining feedback on your Gates Cambridge scholarship application from a campus committee, then you need to submit materials by the August 26 noon deadline. University faculty and staff who are familiar with the Gates Cambridge Scholarship will review materials received by this date and will conduct an interview. If materials are submitted after August 26, only the Office of Scholarships for International Study will review the materials and you will not receive a chance to interview with the committee at that time.
Required information:
1. Transcripts from all colleges attended (photocopies acceptable– one set may be submitted covering multiple scholarships)
2. 3 Letters of Recommendation particular to the student’s Gates Cambridge application, two of which are part of the Cambridge application and a third that is a personal reference — generally from a faculty member. It is best for this third referee to fill out the specific Personal Reference Form
3. A complete Cambridge University application for admission (including writing sample, if required, but no photos)
Final Submittal Deadline Received October 15, 2008.
For those pursuing graduate study, Gates Cambridge scholarship applications are a part of the general Cambridge application. The applicant is responsible for mailing his/her application to Cambridge (including all original transcripts in sealed envelopes, a passport-size photo, and three recommendations in appropriately marked, signed, sealed envelopes). In all cases, the materials need to be received at Cambridge by October 15. The Office of Scholarships for International Study would appreciate a copy of all materials (including letters) prior to submission. Letters should be written to the attention of the “Board of Graduate Studies”. If you wish to include the address, it is:
The Secretary
Board of Graduate Studies
4 Mill Lane
Cambridge CB2 1RZ
United Kingdom
For those pursuing undergraduate admission, you first must complete a Cambridge application and gain admission to a particular college. Once you are admitted to a college as an undergraduate, the college will send you a supplemental application form for the Gates scholarship. The applicant is responsible for completing the supplemental application to Cambridge and ensuring that these materials are received by the deadline. The Office of Scholarships for International Study would appreciate a copy of all materials prior to submission.
The Final Stages:
Shortlisted candidates will be called for a national interview held in Annapolis in January or February 2009. The Office of Scholarships for International Study will coordinate mock interviews for those students called to an interview. The final selection is generally publicly announced within a week of the Gates Cambridge interview.
General Application Tips:
Review general tips and view sample application materials
The Gates reviewers will review your entire Cambridge application, so do not repeat yourself in the materials. Write “N/A” throughout the application for items that are not applicable. The GRE is rarely required for admission to Cambridge, but some courses, such as religious studies and economics may require it — look at your individual Department.
International students who have a Green Card should apply through the U.S. If a student is in the U.S. only for education, then they should apply through their home country. In that case, the international student must also apply for an ORS award.
Personal Statement: The scholarship is not for ’rounding out’ education. Solid applications demonstrate that a student plans to contribute to, and not just receive from, Cambridge. A Gates Scholar will change the world by good research, analysis, and proposing solutions. The Foundation desires students who feel the need and have the abilities to contribute creative solutions to problems in all areas — not just academics. Student must be extremely self-motivated, be intellectually curious, and know they have much to learn. An applicant should show that Cambridge is the best place to pursue their studies. The Gates should be more of an incentive to achieve than a reward for past accomplishments.
Recommendation Letters: The personal reference should know something about the candidate’s service or leadership activities, but not be solely a family friend in most cases. However, it is not necessary that this letter be academic.

Get £5 Pounds Per Referral From Matched.Co.UK
If you refer a lot of people say 100 in a month’s time, then you get £500. That’s in exaggeration though as it’s hard to get many referrals but it’s not impossible however. As a blogger, it’s a must that you join Matched.Co.UK.
Now that you know about this great affiliate program, my guess is that you will join but some of you will not join under my referral. You don’t want to give me an easy £5. But it’s your decision. If you join under me my sincerest gratitude! If not, I respect that. But we have this thing called “karma”. It can strike back at the “ingratos”!
So good luck and start your way to making more and more money!

Trade Show Success: The Power of Asking Questions

Trade Show Success: The Power of Asking Questions
Make no mistake — you’re in a rough spot. Exhibiting is a competitive environment. You’re vying for attendee’s attention, against companies that are larger, better-funded, with newer exhibits and cooler ideas than you’ve got. What this means is that anything you can do to differentiate yourself from the crowd is a “Very Good Thing.” Being different gives you an edge over the masses. On the other hand, being different invariably costs money. Or maybe not. Luckily, asking great questions is a skill that can be taught to those who don’t already have it. If you’re like me, and weren’t born with that great skill, here are seven strategies your team can start using today to make themselves better exhibitors:
Strategy #1: Listen The best questions begin in silence.
Train your people to embrace the 80/20 rule — they should be listening 80% of the time. Listening is more than not talking. It’s an opportunity to focus on the information the visitor is providing. The data they’re sharing is invaluable and helps frame more appropriate questions throughout the conversation. For sales people in particular, listening is a real challenge. Yet, if they conquer and embrace this skill, they could easily boost their performance in flash!
Strategy #2: Determine Identities Quickly
One of the first questions your team should ask is some variation of “Who are you and what do you do?” Never, ever rely on badges. People can easily swap them. This is probably the most commonly used competitive intelligence gathering strategy. You want to determine identity quickly for a number of reasons, but the primary one is this: Knowing who you’re talking to allows you to deliver information in the most appropriate fashion: a buyer for a powerful chain is a very different attendee than an intern at a friendly competitor!
Strategy #3: Ask Open Ended Questions
The first question you ask a booth visitor should never be one that they can answer with a simple “Yes” or “No.” This is an easy way to give them permission to end the conversation quickly. Known as “closed questions, “Yes” or “No” answers, don’t usually help you to understand your visitor’s needs. The better alternative is to focus on questions that invite attendees to tell you more about themselves, their challenges or their particular situations (their stories). These include questions such as: - What are you doing about X? - How do you handle X? - When do you need X?
Strategy #4: Follow Up With a Relevant Question
When a visitor spends time telling you their story about a particular situation or challenge, your very next question must relate to what they’ve just told you. This then demonstrates that you’re actually listening, and care about what they have to say. Failing to do this is likely to damage, if not destroy any credibility you may have established throughout the conversation so far. Since this is such a common mistake exhibitors make, it’s well worth having your team practice this skill in pre-show role-playing exercises. Have them work at this until it’s automatic and starts to feels completely natural to them.
Strategy #5: Compliment Them
If you find yourself with a visitor who’s somewhat reluctant to talk about their situation, try complimenting them. It’s a subtle yet powerful way to stroke their ego. A simple “I’d really like to know what you think about X,” or “What’s your opinion on Y” will often get people talking, especially those individuals who love to show off their knowledge. I’m sure you know the type! Remember that everyone likes to be valued and recognized. Be careful with this. You always want to appear genuine, without seeming to fawn over your visitors.
Strategy #6: Get Off Topic
Exhibiting is not just about making those immediate sales. There’s far more that goes on with your booth visitor. Building long-lasting, profitable relationships is key! To do this effectively, you may need to take the conversation ‘off-topic.’ Don’t be afraid to use questions to do this. Ask questions that allow you to get to know the visitor better. This can be as simple as “Where are you from?” Look to visual cues — clothing, jewelry, pin, etc. - anything that allows you to go further conversationally and further reinforce the relationship.
Strategy #7: Go After Low Lying Fruit
Visitors often indicate, often unconsciously, what they want to talk about. If they mention a subject repeatedly, or devote considerable time in one particular area, that’s a pretty good clue to let you know that this topic is important to them. Yet many times, either exhibitors don’t hear what’s being said, because they’re tuned into their own mind or, they might ’shy away’ from a topic because it’s sensitive, or something they just don’t know about. They might avoid the latter not to show their ignorance.
Speaking from experience, that’s not a good, solid plan of action. What’s it says to the visitor is that “you’re just not interested” in them or their situation. It takes courage to ‘grab the bull by the horns’ and frame questions directly around that topic, inviting visitors to elaborate further. For example, “You seem to have concerns about our widget’s durability. Could you tell me what’s troubling you?” Addressing these concerns head on is the best way to build a prospect’s confidence in your products and services.
Asking questions is only half the battle. The other half of the equation concerns what you do with the answers they give you. If your team asks great questions, listens to the answers, and then responds with the standard boilerplate one-size-fits-all answer, you’ve accomplished nothing.
Instead, answers must be customized on the spot - responsive, not only, to the client’s needs, but also to the tone and timing of the conversation. Brief your people on the need to take things further than just the familiar and often, boring, sales pitch. Keeping the focus on relationship building and the lifetime value of the customer helps make this easier and takes a lot of pressure off of your team. It’s far easier to concentrate on having a meaningful, value-laden exchange if your team knows this isn’t their only chance at bat. With any luck, this is just the beginning. They’ll be asking your customers questions for years to come!

Your Media Mix Is Essential
July 13, 2008
Integrated marketing is your key to success. By combining multiple media formats, your message is more powerful and your marketing more effective. In this post Michael Hubbard, CEO of Media Two Interact give us great insight into the power of a diversified media mix.Determining the right mix of search and display buys must be determined on a client-by-client basis. Often, as a media buyer or agency, you are faced with a client who wants to raise the search budget because he or she thinks spending more money on search will lead to better search results. The reality is that spending a larger chunk of your budget by buying up all the related keywords may increase clicks, but it is unlikely to have a significant effect on conversions because that big mix of keywords is no more targeted than before.
For instance, if you’re Apple, you’re catering to a very specific segment of online electronics shoppers. Basic keywords like “mp3 player,” “computer,” “processor” or “laptop” may technically apply to the products you carry, but the audience searching for those terms could be looking for something entirely different. If you’re looking for Mac users, not just anyone in the market for a computer, why waste the search dollars?
A better technique is to spend a portion of your marketing budget on the most targeted search keywords and then dedicate a good portion of your budget to display advertising to support the search programs, sending more qualified buyers to the search engines. You do this with demographic/geographic and behaviorally targeted ad buys and more brand-based placements to really ensure you’re reaching the shoppers with the most potential to buy your specific product or service.
After seeing display ads while browsing, users will often go to their favorite engine and search for the brand they saw in the ad. The reason for this may be because people don’t like to click on banner ads as a rule, but once they’ve seen enough ads to establish brand recall, they will go to a channel they’re comfortable with to find it. The point is, there’s nothing to brand on search engines alone; something else is always driving you there, and display is one of those big drivers of traffic.
The great part of multiple media is that the strategy is two-pronged because in addition to supporting search, display has its own ROI objectives, which means double the benefit for you. Search is a powerhouse to be sure, but display can be the wind beneath its wings.

Here-WithIn-I-Offer-A-Proposal-That-I-Believe-ALL-Will-Recognize-As-The-Next-Logical-Step-In-How-We-Write-Read-Assess-Interpret-Text: The World-Is-No-Longer-Black-Or-White.
I Propose That All Give Serious Consideration To Writing-In-Color(s) , With Each Color Representing A Respective Level of Significance Within A Text.
The Visible Spectrum Would Be The Basis For The Relative Levels Of Significance Of Given Text WHERE
- Text of Least Importance Would Be Highlighted In RED;
- Text of Intermediate Importance Highlighted In GREEN;
- Text of Greatest Importance Highlighted in VIOLET, and
- Text of In-Between Importance Highlighted in Appropriate Colors: ORANGE, BLUE, INDIGO
Initially, TEXT would be COLORED at the PARAGRAPH LEVEL By The Author(s).
Adjoining OR Disjunct Sections of Text Could Have The SAME COLOR.
Upon Publication, The Reader Would Have The Ability To ReCOLOR The TEXT ToReflect His/Her View On The Relative Significant Of Text In His/Her Opinion And/Or Relative To A Particular Purpose.
I also envision a feature by which The Reader would be able to colorlight individual terms and/or phrases.
The Higher The Color, The More Significant The Text.

New Team Gushue confirmed
July 13, 2008
As speculated, Ryan Fry of Winnipeg and former Gushue lead Jamie Korab will suit up for Gushue and third man Mark Nichols next season.
The skip – whose team with Nichols and the departed Chris Schille and Dave Noftall finished 10th on The Curling News Gold Trail list at just over $62,000 in season winnings – spoke to TCN early this afternoon.
“We’re pretty excited,” said Gushue, referring to himself and Nichols. “We were contacted by both Ryan and Jamie shortly after the Brier, and we weren’t sure what we wanted to do (for the next season).
“We were intrigued.”
Gushue adds that he was unlikely to appear at Victoria’s Bear Mountain Classic, a major World Curling Tour cashspiel held just before his hometown Tylenol Players’ Championship, except that he and Nichols considered it “a good opportunity to sit down and speak to Ryan in person, about what he was thinking and wanted to do with us.
“He’s now got three other guys very close to his age who are trying to build the same thing. His goals were very much in line with ours.”
The deal was then confirmed during the TPC at Mile One Stadium in St. John’s But what are the goals, exactly?
“It’s obviously Vancouver and also 2014 too,” the defending Olympic champion confirmed.
Fry’s motives, of course, were well-publicized earlier this week (examples located here and here). But he spoke briefly with The Curling News too, before hopping on a Thursday morning flight to Sudbury, Ontario for the season-ending celebrity/charity Heart to Heart Bonspiel.
“It’s like switching from one team to another; except they’re about 5,000 miles away,” said Fry, who finished third in Manitoba with Jeff Stoughton after winning the Bison title with him in 2007.
“I’m really excited. If things go as planned, we can hopefully make some headway to getting into the top four in the country.”
Gushue admits that he and Nichols were delighted to hear that Fry was willing to move to and live on The Rock, full-time… and avoid the new provincial residency restrictions that forced second man Schille to depart the team and return to Alberta.
“We were shocked,” Gushue confirmed. “We thought we’d won the lottery, that’s a good way of putting it.”
And what about Jamie Korab, the Gushue loyallist who was cut adrift following the 2007 Brier? Curling fans saw the split as a typical divorce among teammates but for Newfoundlanders… well, they went somewhat bonkers.
“Jamie seems to have the drive again,” said Gushue.
“I think he’s been quoted recently as saying he overreacted last year and took it a bit personally. He knows what it takes to win and he knows he really didn’t have the drive that year… I think he regretted how things went down and of course then it snowballed and snowballed. It really got out of hand.”
“People have to realize we have the smallest talent pool across Canada,” Gushue added.
“It’s hard to try and find the right fit, the diamond in the rough, so to speak. So it’s been a challenge. If we had thousands of players to draw from like they do in the rest of the country… at the same time, I’m not going to apologize for trying to build as strong a team as you can. I do think that it’s part of the game now.”
Gushue also spoke about his two years since Turin and drew what might become a parallel to another rival skip, who also changed his team following an Olympic appearance… Kevin Martin, the 2008 world champion.
“We’re disappointed (with the last two years),” said Gushue. “Ever since the Olympics we’ve been struggling to find four guys with the same goals, the same drive. The fact that Ryan and Jamie both have that drive is amazing.
“I think a great example is Kevin (Martin). The last couple of years (of his old team) he didn’t seem to have that sparkle in his eyes any more. Then he gets these three young guys with strong goals and a work ethic and I’d say there is a spark there now.”
So what does Korab think about his skip’s comment that he seems to have the drive back?
“I would agree 125 per cent,” Korab declared.
“Without a doubt, back in ’06 we win the gold, Canada’s first Olympic gold for the men, the pinnacle of our sport, blah-blah,” said the excitable Korab.
“And then maybe I was a little lackadaisical. We lose the Brier final, still have a good year, but I guess I thought things would come easy. I didn’t train as hard, didn’t work as hard as I had. And when you make it to that level, people are gunning for you. So you’ve gotta work hard.
“So to say I have the drive again would be an understatement.”
Korab said he understands – now – how the decision to cut him from the team wasn’t meant to be personal.
“I got cut,” said Korab. “The guys didn’t do anything to hurt me, they made the best move for the team and looking back, I agree (with their decision).”
Korab reports that yes indeed, he and his former mates had a few conversations in the lead-up to this year’s Brier – and at the event itself.
“There wasn’t much contact during the summer, but we weren’t going to hold out forever,” said Korab.
“We had a few good conversations at provincials, and then I was actually out at the Brier and I wished the boys the best of luck. It wasn’t fake, it was really nice. I also got to see Brad’s baby, I hadn’t had a chance to see her before.
“Meanwhile me and Ryan we kinda get talking, and he suggests it would be great if we’re both on that team, and I say ‘Well yeah, it would be great, except…’
“Anyway, we literally threw it out on the table and started talking. And when the calls came in there was a lot of excitement.”
Gushue and Korab will appear on local St. John’s television (NTN) Thursday evening for the formal announcement to the people of Newfoundland and Labrador.
The people of curling, meanwhile, have this announcement here and now.
