eCAT: Online Electronic Lab Notebook For Scientific Research

October 29, 2009

Nigel H Goddard , Rory Macneil and Jonathan Ritchie / Automated Experimentation 2009 /  1:4  / doi:10.1186/1759-4499-1-4 /  Published: 29 October 2009

Abstract (provisional)

Background

eCAT is an electronic lab notebook (ELN) developed by Axiope Limited. It is the first online ELN, the first ELN to be developed in close collaboration with lab scientists, and the first ELN to be targeted at researchers in non-commercial institutions. eCAT was developed in response to feedback from users of a predecessor product. By late 2006 the basic concept had been clarified: a highly scalable web-based collaboration tool that possessed the basic capabilities of commercial ELNs, i.e. a permissions system, controlled sharing, an audit trail, electronic signature and search, and a front end that looked like the electronic counterpart to a paper notebook.

Results

During the development of the beta version feedback was incorporated from many groups including the FDA’s Center for Biologics Evaluation & Research, Uppsala University, Children’s Hospital Boston, Alex Swarbrick’s lab at the Garvan Institute in Sydney and Martin Spitaler at Imperial College. More than 100 individuals and groups worldwide then participated in the beta testing between September 2008 and June 2009. The generally positive response is reflected in the following quote about how one lab is making use of eCAT: “Everyone uses it as an electronic notebook, so they can compile the diverse collections of data that we generate as biologists, such as images and spreadsheets. We use to it to take minutes of meetings. We also use it to manage our common stocks of antibodies, plasmids and so on. Finally, perhaps the most important feature for us is the ability to link records, reagents and experiments.”

Conclusions

By developing eCAT in close collaboration with lab scientists, Axiope has come up with a practical and easy to use product that meets the need of scientists to manage, store and share data online. eCAT is already being perceived as a product that labs can continue to use as their data management and sharing grows in scale and complexity.

Best of Us Curling Challenge?

October 28, 2009

Best of Us Curling Challenge?

The International Olympic Committee has launched a contest, The Best of Us Challenge, which offers the chance to win some branded IOC merchandise as well as a trip to the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games or the Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games.

Olympic athletes from around the world have created video “challenges” and invite you to take them up on that challenge.

Relax – these athletes aren’t leaning on their particular sport expertise… not at all, actually.

For example, Spanish tennis star Rafael Nadal wants to see if you can hold more tennis balls at one time than he can (he picked up and held 24 balls in 30 seconds). U.S. Alpine Skiier Lindsey Vonn wants to know, in a 30-second time limit, in how many different languages can you say “hello?” (She came up with nine)

Here’s our challenge to curling fans: how many of you will choose the option to “submit your own challenge” and bring a little bit of curling-oriented fun to this campaign?

Anyone who submits a video challenge to the IOC contest website with some kind of curling theme attached to it will win a free subscription to The Curling News, for yourself or a friend/family member.

And, of course, we’ll make you famous. Guaranteed.

Simply notify us of your IOC submission by emailing us at contest_at_thecurlingnews.com. Go for it!

Sue Bradford to resign from Parliament

Not long ago, Sue Bradford wrote this message on her Twitter account, breaking her own embargo.

Media conference 10am to announce I’m standing down from Parliament at end October – but am not resigning from Greens or political activism

Dave Clendon is the next on the list. He stood against John Key in Helensville but lives in Mt Albert- formerly held by Helen Clark.

Looks like the loss of the leadership to Metiria Turei really hurt. But, despite Bradford being one of the most effective backbenchers, in terms of getting legislation passed, this is the best thing that has happened to the Greens this year. Watch for a rise in the polls for the Greens.

Backbenchers was a lot of fun last nightI

Backbenchers was a lot of fun last night

I was at Backbenchers last night. I haven’t been for a while but decided to go, not even knowing who was on the panel. Parliament was out as members day finished early

It was one of the best ever- so many MPs. There were at least 25 MPs, mainly Labour, but every party was represented apart from Dunne and Anderton. Best comment of the night was when Hone Harawira – in the audience at the time a few metres away from me – was handed the microphone asking for his views on putting the H in Wanganui. His response:

Shane was just telling me that spelling Wanganui without an H is like Cunliffe without a T

David Cunliffe was just behind him. Shane Jones arrived just before the programme started. The pub was in hysterics. It’s an old joke, but I think that’s the first time that has been said in any media – let alone live on TV. Backbenchers is broadcast live by TVNZ7. Not sure what Cunliffe thinks of having his name spelled Cunliffte…

Anyway the place was packed, although it started thinning out after 10.30pm. The good thing about Backbenchers is no matter what political stripe you are, everyone gets on. I’m sure I saw Victoria University student president Jasmine Freemantle having a good chin wag with Sir Roger Douglas – their politics are poles apart.

How To Solve Your Most Difficult Marketing Questions

October 28, 2009

About a year or two ago I was sitting at my computer and started Google-ing to find an answer to a pretty difficult marketing question. Essentially I was looking for someone out there who was facing the exact same Internet marketing issue and had a quick response.
After searching and searching, I found nothing. Because I’m so persistent, I took my search off line and started to tap into my network of marketing related colleagues, friends, and acquaintances. It took me quite a bit of time, but I got the answer I was looking for.

Then it dawned on me. Why wasn’t it easier to find the answer I was looking for online? Surely someone somewhere must have asked the same question, engaged others, and shared their answer on a blog or web page! From that struggle, the Internet Marketing Forum, on my main web site MarketingScoop.com was born.

Earlier this year, I launched the forum to serve as a marketing community. As is the case with any marketing community, it’s success is based on the interest of those who inhabit it to be there, engage, and interact with one another. Based on user feedback, I recently made investments in the forum to improve usability and cover additional topics for community members to share successes, failures, and experience.

I encourage each of you to get involved in the Internet Marketing Forum today. It costs nothing to join and will serve as a great resource for getting your most difficult marketing related questions answered. Please let me know what you think and how we can encourage others to learn about the forum. It is my goal to build a marketing community for us to learn, contribute, and grow.

Case of three missing women remains unsolved

October 27, 2009

It was 1973 when three women, who were on campus for more than three decades, vanished without a trace.

Aglaia, Euphrosyne and Thalia were mainstays at what was then the University of Kansas City (UKC). These “Three Graces,” as they were known, could always be found wading in the fountain outside Manheim Hall.

Identifying the ghosts of Epperson House

October 27, 2009

Epperson House is haunted and the ghosts know you’re there. They can see you, and sometimes, you can see them.

Epperson House, also known as Hawthorne Hall, is now home to the School of Architecture.

But its history tells of a much darker tale – one of abortion, a drowning and suicide.
