Roo bus riders could be future

The Student Government Association (SGA) passed a resolution Nov. 17 calling for a new student transportation system.
If approved by the Missouri Board of Curators in January, UMKC will sign a contract with the Kansas City Area Transportation Authority (KCATA) to provide students access to the Metro bus system starting fall 2010.

Appropriate student conduct was the basis of two resolutions brought before the Student Government Association (SGA) Nov. 17.
Both responded to allegations against former SGA president Bridgett Johnson, who allegedly forged Vice Chancellor Mel Tyler’s signature on a document used in Jackson County court.

Forsee addresses concerns

Challenges facing the University of Missouri System (UM) were the focus of a town hall meeting Nov. 19 in Pierson Auditorium.
UM President Gary Forsee was on campus to both discuss the current challenges and address any concerns.
Forsee encouraged students, staff and faculty to speak up about concerns.

Artist manifests bicycle mythology

A Mayan vision serpent has taken up residence on campus.
What began as a simple bike repair shop known as The Hub, located in the damp basement of 5301 Charlotte Street, is now home to the mythical creature.
Kat Dison, painter, sculpture and bicycle mechanic at The Hub, is its creator.

Greek housing in spotlight

The UMKC Greek Housing Task Force has been charged with developing a “30,000-foot” view of future Greek housing by the end of the semester.
Charged by Vice Chancellor Mel Tyler and led by Assistant Dean of Students Eric Grospitch, the task force is determining the best course of action to get all 18 fraternities and sororities out of the neighborhoods and closer to campus.

Campus could see new development

A grocery store, office space, a parking structure and retail space are all components of a site development plan that could potentially be brought to life on campus.
“I want to emphasize, this is very much in an early stage and in draft form,” said Vice Chancellor of Administrative Services Richard Anderson.

Education students help needy kids

More than 100 area kids received a special Thanksgiving surprise thanks to the efforts of the UMKC School of Education (SOE).
In conjunction with American Education Week and Spirit Week, the SOE Student Government Association teamed up with Harvesters to provide children at three local schools art supplies.

Students speak their minds

Twice a year, Communication Studies students let their voices be heard.
More than 400 Communication Studies students and faculty packed into Pierson Auditorium Nov. 17 for the Faye Kircher Public Speaking Contest.
The contest involved all 23 sections of the Communication Studies 110 classes at UMKC.

Breakthroughs emerge from solar cells

Solar cells are the source of a scientific breakthrough at UMKC.
Zhonghua Peng, professor of Chemistry at UMKC, is one of the minds responsible for the advancement.
Peng teamed up with Daniel Kuroda and C.P. Singh, professors at the University of Florida, to research solar cells.
