Students capture work of code officer

Ryan?Kasper-Cushman?doesn’t usually get much attention for his job as a city code officer with the Kansas City Neighborhood Preservation Office.

But last semester, four UMKC students captured the essence of his work in a short documentary.

“You know, they had to make a five-minute film,” Kasper-Cushman said.

Filmmaking is a passion for UMKC senior Dion Laws.

A non-traditional student, Laws joined the workforce before going to college. He worked for Ford Motor Company for four years before deciding to pursue a career in filmmaking. He said he is determined to succeed.

Clearing the air around smoking policy

While legislators debate statewide smoking laws, some students are still unsure what the smoking rules on campus are.

Jamie Walsh, senior in Communication Studies, is one of them.

She said she does not worry about the smoking policy because she does not smoke.

Focusing on the positive

Despite years of experience covering war and famine as a journalist, Peter Morello recently visited Haiti and saw the worst devastation he has ever seen.

A professor of journalism at UMKC for the last 10 years, Morello was a PBS correspondent in Europe and covered the breakup of the Soviet Union, the war in Bosnia and the famine relief efforts in Somalia.

Peace Corps reaches out to students

The U.S. Peace Corps held a recruitment seminar on campus last week with hopes of educating students about its benefits.

Several students met with recruiter Betsy Blum, who explained the purpose of the Peace Corps and why it is important for students.

“The mission is to promote world peace and friendship,” Blum said.

UMKC knows urban education

UMKC’s Institute for Urban Education (IUE) is partnering with three Kansas City school districts and communities to revolutionize the way teachers are educated.

The School of Education at UMKC created IUE in 2005 after a group of educators decided teachers were not being correctly prepared for urban education.
