Berkman Center Lecture / Webcast > Transforming Scholarly Communication | September 18 2009 |

September 13, 2009

Lee Dirks / Director, Education & Scholarly Communication / Microsoft External Research

Friday/ September 18, 1:15pm / Pound Hall Room 100 (Map) / Free and Open to the Public /

In Person > RSVP Requested / Webcast > Live at 1:15 pm ET.

This event is co-sponsored by the Harvard Business School Knowledge and Library Services, Harvard Law School Library, and the Office for Scholarly Communication.

In the future, frontier research in many fields will increasingly require the collaboration of globally distributed groups of researchers needing access to distributed computing, data resources and support for remote access to expensive, multi-national specialized facilities such as telescopes and accelerators or specialist data archives.

There is also a general belief that an important road to innovation will be provided by multi-disciplinary and collaborative research – from bio-informatics and earth systems science to social science and archeology. There will also be an explosion in the amount of research data collected in the next decade – petabytes will be common in many fields. These future research requirements constitute the ‘eResearch‘ agenda.

Powerful software services will be widely deployed on top of the academic research networks to form the necessary ‘Cyberinfrastructure‘ to provide a collaborative research environment for the global academic community.

The difficulties in combining data and information from distributed sources, the multi-disciplinary nature of research and collaboration, and the need to move to present researchers with tooling that enable them to express what they want to do rather than how to do it highlight the need for an ecosystem of Semantic Computing technologies.

Such technologies will further facilitate information sharing and discovery, will enable reasoning over information, and will allow us to start thinking about knowledge and how it can be handled by computers.This talk will review the elements of this vision and explain the need for semantic-oriented computing by exploring eResearch projects that have successfully applied relevant technologies — and anticipated impact on scholarly communication as we know it today.

It will also suggest that a software + service model with scientific services delivered from the cloud will become an increasingly accepted model for research.

About Lee

One last look at the Alpha Five Version 10 training session: Customer testimonials

September 4, 2009

One of our customers snapped this picture at the Alpha Five Version 10 training session, and I just had to share!

Since our conference wrapped up a few weeks a go, my inbox has been flooded with positive feedback. Of course, I’ve pulled out a few of my favorites. Like our last customer testimonial post, I’ve redacted the names from the testimonials below, rather than getting permission from everyone.

Selwyn/Richard,

I just wanted to thank both of you for the past day and a half. I regret that I didn’t get a chance to meet and talk to both of you. I had to leave a little earlier than I planned to go put out a fire at work but yesterday’s and this morning’s session was well worth the trip. It was great to meet fellow Alpha users (really nice to finally put faces to many names).

You both must be very excited about the future that Alpha holds. V10 is one of the most revolutionary products I have used. To be able to get what you can out of this product without coding (mind boggling to think about what you can do by being able to combine it with coding) is really quite amazing. I am actually excited about work once again.

I look forward to each new build and what it brings.

I hope than we have an opportunity to talk in the future about your product, I have a couple of suggestions that I think would help the product, especially in melding the web/desktop closer together. You have made a great start with being able to add grids to the desktop, and I think a few minor (seem minor to me) could really make it so much more useful to new users. I really believe that you have a great opportunity to launch a great products and wish you nothing but success.

Thanks once again.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Richard,
I very much enjoyed attending the conference. It was very insightful regarding the advances made to the Web App Server, and for the first time I came away from the WAS with the feeling that I might be able to use it for “desktop only” clients due to performance, on the theory that any desktop client could evolve to a web or hybrid client.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

About your product… Now that I am learning this, I cannot believe you guys aren’t on every shelf in every computer place nationwide.. THIS IS WONDERFUL and EASY (Once you get the hang of it) It makes me look like a GURU yay!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hi all,
Just a quick to thank you all for such an excellent training session. Things moved along very well and it was great to see the stability of V10 at this point in it’s Beta development. I think Alpha Software came across in a very professional and prepared manner. Everything worked, the audio system was excellent, the air conditioning was right on and all speakers came across very well. I know how hard it is to pull this together and have it all go smoothly. Well done.
It was really impressive to see the turnout. Think about it .. this training was done on very short notice and we are still in the grip of the worst global recession we have experienced in our lifetimes. Still, Alpha was able to draw developers from all over the world. These developers were that interested in the potential of what V10 represents to their productivity to invest the time and money to learn about this new tool, even when money is so tight. I think the web videos had a lot to do with the interest, so it’s important to keep these coming.
It was fun to just focus on the software and envision it’s potential. I learned a lot too!
Thanks again.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Thanks for the quick reply.

The software is fantastic! I am currently building new applications in V10, and converting many of my current applications to V10, which in turn means that as soon as it becomes “officially” available, I will be buying at least one copy for my server.

I really want to thank you for allowing me to be a “beta tester” for this exciting new product. I am overly impressed, and you can be sure I am “bragging” about it all the time!

As always, you and Selwyn are doing a great job. Please keep up the good work.

It doesn’t get betta’ than beta codeless Ajax

September 3, 2009

Rather than hit you with a bunch of posts every time I get an e-mail from one of our Alpha Five Version 10 beta developers, I thought I’d roll them up into a few larger posts. As I’ve said, the response to v10 — and codeless Ajax in particular — has been overwhelmingly positive. And the messages continue to flow in.

I’m going to drop their comments in right here, verbatim, but with their names and e-mail addresses redacted (instead of getting permission from everyone to post their names).

First a little background:

I am an I.T professional with twenty four years experience, and have worked with PowerBuilder, Oracle Forms, Crystal Reports, and some older software most of you would not recognize

Currently I am involved in setting up a reporting database, using data from the CERNER health care suite of products.

I dabbled with A5 V8 as a novice and liked what I saw on the surface

Now, on to V10, and the videos. I just watched a few on the web components and the grid components and I am completely amazed. If the final product ships with all this working correctly, and Alpha prices this well and does some decent promotions/advertising, I believe it will be a game changer. I cannot believe the amount of customization available without coding. The amount of hours that Alpha must have put into this ‘codeless Ajax’ must be staggering.

And to have the owners post videos at 2AM, and get the information out there, is unprecedented in this industry.

I will download the final product as a trial, and if all goes well, I will purchase it.

It is the first week of August and I hope this ships soon, the suspense is killing me.

Good work.

““““““““`

Hello Richard,

Just a an initial start note, I started playing with row expanders in grids and it took me less then 30 min to setup a webpage. With a 3 tier row expander grid system starting with the Brand as level 1 then the Appliance Groups (limited to the Brand) as level 2. Then the actual range of appliances as level 3 filtered to the Brand/ Group combination. The web development needs the right dbf tables to use to make rapid solutions possible but that is a breeze. With the operations and Xbasic code solutions. The simplicity of it all plus the help notes shown along the way truly justifies RAD development. My story will continue when I continue the parts and pdf doc insertion. Gosh … there is so much to explore … it is outstanding and so simple.
I will keep you informed.

““““““““`

About your product… Now that I am learning this, I cannot believe you guys aren’t on every shelf in every computer place nationwide.. THIS IS WONDERFUL and EASY (Once you get the hang of it) It makes me look like a GURU yay!

““““““““`

Of course im enjoying it, v10 is GROUND BREAKING, I promise to prepare a video of one application im developing in v10 and send it to you. Im all ready developing 2 different applications (not too wise I know, but I just cant help it), grid templates makes work flow so much faster especially because I don’t have to translate every single property over and over again, you have a winner here.

Thank you again for your time and patience.

I can’t help but smile every time I read your e-mails. In fact, I did a little more than smile when that last note came in. The developer is an IT guy from a large mining company in Mexico. I think it’s really saying something if someone from a mining company calls our product ground breaking. As one of our own developers Kurt noted, he can be sure we’ll never give him “the shaft.” And I hope he continues to enjoy it as he “gets further down into it.” Okay, I’ve had my fun. I promise I’ll stop now before I “dig myself any deeper.” ;)

A Simple Formula For Effective Marketing

September 3, 2009

Ever since the first merchant promoted his product to make a meaningful trade, marketing has been an essential part of any sales or promotional formula. Today, the formula seems complex, but it doesn’t have to be. At the core of any effective marketing strategy is value.

So how can you create value for your customers? Begin with a firm understanding of your market. Who are your best customers? Who has a need that you can meet with your products and services? Delivering value becomes easy once you understand what you customers need and you find a way to deliver it at a fair price.

If you’re struggling to create real value for your customers, learn from the following example which is very easy to duplicate and delivers value for all involved. This company – we’ll call them Services Unlimited (they asked me to keep their name confidential), has been delivering web design services for nearly a decade. They understand their customers and are always trying to deliver top notch service. However, business has been slow and they are looking to improve their marketing effectiveness.

One of the designers, who’s established some great relationships with customers, suggests that the company share the materials he shares with his customers online. The material he’s referring to is a guide on how to choose the right service provider. The agency likes the idea and repackages the guide as, “10 Things You Must Know Before Choosing An Agency!” before publishing it to the web. This is information that is valuable to their prospective customers and improves the agency’s success.

The company promotes the online resource (pdf) via their web site, to customers, prospects, and through pay-per-click campaigns. Before being able to download the guide, entering a first name and email are required. Once the email address is confirmed through a verification email, users are given access to the downloadable PDF. This has been set up as part of an auto-responder, dripping messages on prospects at different intervals.

The purpose of the auto responder is to provide additional value, build a relationship/affinity for the agency and essentially move them through the decision making process. Now you might be wondering how successful a short list of do’s and dont’s may be, but done correctly, each touch provides value.

So How Did This Campaign Perform?
Okay, you are probably wondering what a free download and a bunch of emails could possibly do for a slowing business.. everything. The effectiveness of this campaign was better than any other direct marketing they had done in quite some time. The conversion rate of 5% was more than double what they were receiving on other campaigns. Additionally, many of the relationships they established were long-term and helped to shape much of the work they do today.

This company learning from their promotional efforts focused on value and now offer other promotions such as a ‘web page makeover’, ‘free evaluation’, etc. When you focus on delivering value, the business will come. Said another way, know what your audience wants and give them a taste – prove value before you ask them to take a chance!

WE WANT YOU to help us make Alpha Five Version 10 even better

August 7, 2009

WE WANT YOU to help us make Alpha Five Version 10 even better
There’s a phenomenon going on with Alpha Five Version 10, which, on the surface, is a positive. But in reality, it’s keeping me up at night. My problem is best articulated by this Bill Gates quote: “Your most unhappy customers are your greatest source of learning.”

Acclaims for Alpha Five Version 10 from beta testers and preview users have been flooding my inbox, like this one, which I received yesterday (verbatim):

Well you certainly are hitting your straps with this aren’t you, that’s just awesome! – Who would have thought the operators (users) would ever have had so much live data so quickly at their disposal. The big benefactors of all this are the SME’s – when things pick up, from what I can see all those Small to Medium businesses will finally have the benefits of live transactional processing in real time, something that has been the exclusive club of the corporates world due to the cost. It’s going to be similar to the DTP revolution where smaller players could publish without the hight costs of typesetting and printing presses – as it changed the world!
- so will this.

You know something else, I have gotten so used to V10 – and the apps it delivers, I look back at what I was developing just 5 weeks ago and can’t imagine just how on earth I could have done things any other way, also I can’t believe how I could not seen just how non competitive or real world the apps were that I was working on, this is what people expect, I know we were delivering only what we were capable of at the time, but still it bothered me.

You know one more thing, I sometimes reflect back to my first PC Days in the early 80’s working on dataflex, no emails or Internet then – and I just think what on earth was I doing on that PC night and day, anyhow – this stuff truly is right up there! – It’s now where it needed to be.

Keep at it – it’s great.

Peter

Who wouldn’t love getting positive feedback? Well, in some ways, me. Because it’s simply not possible that everything about Alpha Five Version 10 can be perfect and breakthrough. What’s happening now is that people are focusing on the standout features. Primarily, codeless Ajax, which, when you see it, really does have a powerful effect on developers — even a mind-blowing effect.

But the problem is, when one feature is so overwhelmingly exciting, the adrenaline generated by that can mask — and in fact probably is masking — other issues that need to be examined by beta testers and users.

If you’re a beta tester of Alpha Five, the best thing you can be doing is not just exercising the codeless Ajax features. Certainly, we need to know where any of those features can be improved. But it’s also important that you look at the platform end to end, and tell us what’s wrong.

What’s incomplete? What’s not performing as fast as you think it should? What has a non-optimal user workflow? What has a confusing menu or dialog? What might not be as productive as it could be? And, of course, are any bugs or “features” causing you to slap your forehead?

I have to say — and this is the absolute honest truth — I have yet to receive dissatisfied feedback from a beta tester. It has been overwhelmingly effervescent. Now, either we really have hit the ball way, way, way out of the park end to end with Alpha Five Version 10, or there are things that are being missed by testers and users.

If you’re a beta or preview user, focus on what we didn’t do well; what we didn’t get right; and what’s wrong, or broken, or buggy, or non-optimal in Alpha Five Version 10.

We thank you and appreciate your positive feedback. And certainly feel free to keep sending it. But remember, the way this product got to where it is today is built on much more than positive feedback. It was built on ALL of your feedback. And I worry that we’re not getting the bad with the good. So please feel free to look past the non-mind-blowing aspects of Version 10, and tell us about what we just didn’t get right.

PhD student: A systems analysis of rodent animal models of human disease

July 14, 2009

PhD student: A systems analysis of rodent animal models of human disease
PhD student: A systems analysis of rodent animal models of human disease

Function title PhD student Where Bioinformatics Laboratory, Academic Medical Center, Amsterdam Apply before July 15, 2009 Project Model organisms have been essential for improving our knowledge of human disease. Especially rodents, mainly mouse and rat, are often used for this purpose, as well as for pre-clinical trials of new drugs and toxicology screens. However, often animal models fail to mimic human disease adequately. As a consequence drugs successfully tested in animal models fail in costly clinical trials or are falsely discarded.
Goal of this project is to explore the suitability of rodents as a model organism for human disease, specifically metabolic syndrome. Since metabolic syndrome is a complex multifactorial group of metabolic conditions, a systems approach will be taken to uncover the molecular networks perturbed by disease.
Specifically, we aim to validate the similarity of a large number of rodent models for metabolic syndrome to their human counterparts. The project is tightly linked to ongoing projects in biological and clinical groups at the AMC. This project is part of the second round of the BioRange programme of the Netherlands Bioinformatics Centre (NBIC; ww.nbic.nl).
Tasks
The successful candidate will work towards a PhD degree in bioinformatics. We will build a compendium of rodent and human metabolic syndrome related gene expression datasets. We develop module-based joint analysis methods that search for conserved patterns consisting of sets of genes and sets of conditions in both rodent model and human under which they are co-expressed. These patterns are used to evaluate the molecular similarity of rodent models and their human counterpart. Conserved patterns will be further interpreted by constructing functional networks for metabolic syndrome in rodents and human. We expect methods developed and resulting conserved patterns and functional networks to be useful for elucidating the model mismatch and for increasing the predictive value of preclinical trials and toxicity screens.
Requirements
We are looking for an enthusiastic communicative team player with
• a MSc in one of the following areas: bioinformatics, computer science, engineering, statistics, physics, plus a proven interest in biology
• strong background in computer science (machine learning, graph algorithms, relational databases)
• good programming knowledge (R, C/Java/C++, SQL)
Additional conditions of employment: The appointment will be on temporary basis for a maximum period of four years. Based on a full-time appointment (36 hours per week), compensation will be according to standard salary levels for PhD students starting with a salary of € 2046,- with a yearly growth to € 2622,- gross a month. The collective employment agreement of the AMC is applicable. Additional information about the vacancy can be obtained
from: Dr. ir. P.D. Moerland Bioinformatics Laboratory Telephone number: +31 (0) 20 566 4660 E-mail address: p.d.moerland@amc.uva.nl
