Last Monday night, Kansas Citians turned out in droves to the Blue Room for some local jazz fun.

Clint Ashlock’s New Jazz Order (NJO), Kansas City’s own big band group, put on a show to a packed house. Featuring some of the best jazz musicians in town, the NJO performed a wide selection of both jazz standards as well as new arrangements from local writers.

M. Sc. Optics and Photonics-Germany
M. Sc. Optics and Photonics

KSOP Masters Education. We believe that a Ph.D.graduate school is unlikely to be successful without the background / infrastructure and the “funneling / filtering” through a corresponding associated, interdisciplinary coordinated masters program, aiming at attracting excellent students from abroad.

36 students per year can be admitted to our masters program. The best students of the masters program are supported by the KSOP Scholarship Program. Access to the KSOP masters education is granted via an application procedure.

A study plan is developed for each individual masters student (corresponding to his/her educational background) when entering the KSOP.

The M.Sc. course is divided into four stages providing the students with the necessary prerequisites (Stage I: Introduction) , to give them a solid background on the most important topics within the wide and diverse field of Optics and Photonics (Stage II: Core Subjects) and let them acquire specialized knowledge (Stage III: Specialization) to be able to competently perform a six-month research project on a current topic of research (masters thesis). In addition, an 8-weeks industrial internship is scheduled between stages 2 and 3.

Scholarship

The KSOP scholarship amounts to 800 Euro/month for international students and 400 Euro/month for German students. Part of the scholarship is a research assistantship. Within the scope of this assistantship, you will have the opportunity to work on a research project in one of the KSOP institutes.

The scholarship is first admitted for 12 months. At the end you have to proof your successful participation in the KSOP M.Sc. Program through very good study results in order to extend the scholarship for another 12 months.
Guideline for Scholarship Application

Step 1 – Fill out the KSOP scholarship application form

You can apply for a scholarship at the KSOP Office after having applied for the program M.Sc. in Optics & Photonics. Please fill out the KSOP Scholarship application form. The application deadline for the upcoming winter semester is July 15 each year.

Please note that you have to send your scholarship documents seperately from your application to the student office, the KSOP Office or the international student office respectively.

You will receive feedback from the KSOP Office on your scholarship application after July 15.

Step 2 – Submit your application

You are required to include the following documents in your application:
- KSOP scholarship application form
- a certified copy of your qualification for university entrance (e.g. Abitur, High School Diploma, Bac.)
- a certified copy of your Bachelor degree (if the Bachelor degree is not yet available at the closing date for applications but will be completed before the registration, candidates can apply with a preliminary transcript of records)
- your CV
- proof of English language profiency: TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) with a minimum of 570 pb, 260 points cb and 88 points ibt or IELTS (International English Languag Testing System) band with a minium of 6.5
- proof of extra-curricular activities
- one or better two recommendations
- Statement of purpose

Please send the complete application preferrably via e-mail or alternatively via postal mail to:

Healthy Eating and Nutrition Event

Bradford rabble rousing over 90 day law

Sue Bradford has advised that WINZ had declined assistance to a beneficiary about to start work because he was not going to be in permanent employment, due the new 90 day law that came into force on Sunday.

I find that pretty hard to believe that WINZ would lawfully do that for that reason. Bradford asked a question in parliament today asking if those who are offered employment under the 90-day probation law are entitled to the same support from Work and Income New Zealand as those offered employment not under the 90-day probation law?

The Minister said they are offered more protection. Given that WINZ work brokers will be arranging some of this employment – and paying much of the first 90 days salary in some cases, WINZ are hardly going to scuffle assistance because the person is under a 90 day probationary period. Beneficiaries can’t get an automatic 13 week stand down if they are fired under the 90 day law, like they can if they are fired after 90 days and don’t take a personal grievance case.

Rajen Prasad asked how the Minister will guarantee that Work and Income staff members do not play judge and jury where there is some doubt about who is at fault in cases where workers are fired during the 90-day trial?

They don’t play judge and jury now. At least they are not supposed to. If there is doubt, beneficiaries have the benefit of the doubt and WINZ will only stand down if the person has been fired under normal circumstances and if they don’t appeal. If they have been fired for any (including no) reason under the 90 day law, they will be treated a little more leniently given that they cannot take a personal grievance case, thus eliminating their stand down to get on a benefit in the interim. They`ll get on a benefit sooner until the employer has been spoken to.

At least what’s what should happen. As there is no mechanism to determine whether an allegation of misconduct actually has any substance, WINZ can’t apply the 13-week stand down without some investigation..

Why we eat what we eat – The psychology of choice and AGM

Food and Health Forum
Date: Monday 16 March 2009| Venue: Royal Society of Medicine

This meeting aims to provide an overview of the latest research into the psychology of food choices. Areas covered will include the role of the hypothalamus, imaging of the brain’s response to hunger, programming of appetite and obesity, the role of physical activity in controlling food cravings, mindless eating, the influence of sound, teenage eating, phenotypes and how we motivate people to change.

At the end of the meeting delegates will have gained a broad and up-to-date overview of the mechanisms that drive people to make food choices. They will have an understanding from this research as to what future research is needed and how we can implement in practice the knowledge that is already there.

On the theory of natural celebration

February 20, 2009

On the theory of natural celebration
Although he’s quite dead, Charles Darwin was never as popular as he was a few days ago.

A public birthday party was held last Friday at the Linda Hall Library (LHL) in honor of Darwin’s 200th birthday.

A first edition copy of “On the Origin of Species” is now on display in the rare books section of LHL.

Conservatory Connections

December 8, 2008

Conservatory Connections
Something besides hushed whispers and clicking heels filled the air on Nov. 21 in the Abstract Expressions Gallery at the Nelson- Atkins Museum of Art.

Music rang throughout the gallery, not from paintings brought to life and spontaneously breaking into song, but from vocalist Stephanie Laws and pianist Michael Pagan performing as part of the museum’s Conservatory Connections program.
